Karl Kempter’s Pastoral Mass in G, Op. 24 — the “Pastoralmesse” first heard in Augsburg on Christmas Eve 1851 — is about seventeen minutes of radiant G major in lilting 6/8, with a shepherd’s drone in the bass and solo voices rising out of the choir. In Bavaria and Austria it has been the sound of Christmas in church ever since. This is the complete performance edition by Paul Lorenz: conductor’s score, every individual part and a professional choral score with organ, delivered as an instant PDF download you own outright. Complete Edition €89.90 (launch price; regular price €119.00), or the Choral Score with Organ on its own for €49.90.

What makes this edition different is that it has already been through the season you are planning. Paul Lorenz has performed the Pastoral Mass on numerous occasions with orchestra, choir and soloists, and everything a Christmas performance needs is in one download — no separate wind set, string set and vocal score to order, no parts to copy by hand. And because the choral score carries the full organ part on the same page as the voices, your choir can rehearse from it in September and your organist can play the Midnight Mass from it if the orchestra is not available — the same pages, the same bar numbers, from first rehearsal to Christmas morning.

Quality in detail

  • Everything in One Download: Conductor’s score (69 pages), the SATB choral score with organ (53 pages), an SATB choir score, and 19 individually extracted parts — flute, two clarinets, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, organ, Violin I, Violin II, viola, cello, double bass and separate Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass parts. 309 print-ready pages, yours to keep and reprint every Christmas.
  • Choral Score with the Organ on the Page: Four voices plus the complete organ part in one score — the copy your choir rehearses from, and the copy your organist can perform the whole mass from in a service without orchestra.
  • Individual Voice Parts for Every Singer: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass also come as single-line parts, so every singer can practise their own line — at home, on a tablet, or for a quick sectional.
  • Solo Passages Marked in the Choir Staves: Kempter writes his solos inside the four voices — each is marked “Solo” and “Tutti”, so you can give them to four soloists or to strong voices from your own choir.
  • Scales to the Forces You Have: Choir and organ for a small chapel, add strings for a fuller sound, or the full orchestra with flute, clarinets, horns, trumpets and timpani for the Christmas high mass — all from the same material.
  • Road-Tested at Christmas: Not a desk edition. Paul Lorenz has performed this mass with orchestra, choir and soloists on numerous occasions — the parts have survived real rehearsals, real page turns and real Christmas services.

Scale the mass to the forces you have

The Pastoral Mass is one of the most flexible festive masses in the repertoire. Library catalogues of Kempter’s original list the strings and organ as the core of the scoring and the flute, clarinets, horns, trumpets and timpani as non-obligatory — so the same material serves very different Christmas situations:

Your forcesWhat you use
Choir and organThe choral score with organ — the organ part on the page carries the whole accompaniment
Choir, strings and organFull score, string parts and organ part — the warm, chamber-sized version for a smaller church
Choir, soloists and full orchestraEverything — flute, clarinets, horns, trumpets and timpani add the pastoral colour and the festive brilliance of the Gloria and Credo

What makes a “Pastoral Mass”

A Pastoralmesse is a Christmas mass in the musical language of the shepherds at the manger: the rocking 6/8 of a cradle song, drone basses like a bagpipe or hurdy-gurdy, horn calls, and melodies in parallel thirds and sixths. The genre flourished in Catholic southern Germany and Austria from the eighteenth century onwards, and Kempter’s Op. 24 is one of its best-loved examples. Kempter served Augsburg Cathedral for decades as organist and later as cathedral music director, and he wrote for exactly the forces a good parish or cathedral choir could muster — which is why his mass has stayed in use for more than 170 years. Listen to the Kyrie and the opening of the Sanctus: the pastoral idiom is audible in the very first bars.

Programming the Pastoral Mass

Seventeen minutes for the complete Ordinary make the Pastoral Mass a natural choice for the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass and the Christmas Day high mass, and it remains appropriate throughout the Christmas season — St Stephen’s Day, New Year and Epiphany. Performed from the choral score with organ alone, it also solves the second service of the day when the orchestra has gone home. In concert it makes a substantial first half of an Advent or Christmas programme; read the guide to programming a Christmas choir concert for running orders that work. Forces, solos, a rehearsal plan up to Christmas Eve and what to check in any edition: the conductor’s guide to Kempter’s Pastoral Mass.

Pair it with Silent Night for SATB choir and Maria durch ein Dornwald ging for the carols around the mass, or with Mozart’s Sparrow Mass for a festive mass in C at Easter. The full Christmas collection and the sacred choral catalogue fill out the rest of the season. If you need a transposition, a reduced scoring or parts for the instruments you actually have this year, ask before you buy — bespoke adaptation is part of what this publisher does.

Pastoral Mass in G (Pastoralmesse), Op. 24 sheet music — frequently asked questions

What exactly is included in the Complete Edition?

Two PDFs with 309 pages in total. The first holds the conductor’s full score (69 pages) and every part: Flute, Clarinet in B-flat 1 and 2, Horn in F 1 and 2, Trumpet in B-flat 1 and 2, Timpani, an SATB choir score (28 pages), separate Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass parts, Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass and Organ (17 pages). The second is the SATB choral score with organ (53 pages) — the same file as the Choral Score edition. All A4, print-ready and tablet-friendly, delivered immediately after purchase.

What is the instrumentation of Kempter’s Pastoral Mass?

This edition is scored for SATB choir with solo passages for soprano, alto, tenor and bass, flute, 2 clarinets in B-flat, 2 horns in F, 2 trumpets in B-flat, timpani, organ, Violin I, Violin II, viola, violoncello and double bass. Library catalogues of Kempter’s original list the flute, clarinets, horns, trumpets and timpani as non-obligatory, with strings and organ as the core — which is why the mass also works with strings and organ, or with organ alone from the choral score.

How long does the Pastoral Mass take to perform?

About 17 minutes for all six movements, calculated from the printed metronome marks — roughly Kyrie 2½ minutes, Gloria 4½, Credo 4½, Sanctus 1, Benedictus 1½ and Agnus Dei 2½. That fits comfortably into a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day liturgy, and it makes a substantial first half of an Advent or Christmas concert.

Do we need four soloists?

No. Kempter writes the solo passages inside the four choir voices rather than as separate solo movements — they are marked “Solo” and “Tutti” in the score and parts. Four soloists give a feast day extra brilliance, but the traditional and most practical solution is a quartet drawn from your own choir.

Can we perform it with choir and organ only?

Yes. The choral score contains the complete organ part on the same pages as the four voices, so choir and organist can perform the whole mass from it — ideal for a small church, a second Christmas service or the whole rehearsal phase. That is why it is also sold on its own. Adding strings, then winds and timpani, scales the same material up to the full festive scoring.

What difficulty level is this?

Grade 3 — comfortable for church, community and semi-professional choirs and for amateur and semi-professional orchestras. The choral writing is largely homophonic and the tempos are moderate (Andante to Allegro); the work lies in a light, dancing 6/8, clean Latin diction and confident solo entries rather than in technical difficulty.

Kempter is public domain — why buy this edition?

Kempter’s music is in the public domain; a performance library is not. Printed material for this mass is traditionally sold as separate items — a conductor’s score, choral scores, a wind set and a string set — ordered and posted. This edition gives you the full score, every individual part, separate Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass parts and a choral score with the organ written out on the page, freshly engraved and laid out for performance, as one instant download that you can print as often as your choir and orchestra need.

What is the difference between the Complete Edition and the Choral Score?

The Choral Score with Organ (€49.90) is the SATB vocal score with the complete organ part — everything a choir and organist need to rehearse and to perform the mass in a service. The Complete Edition (€89.90 launch price, regular price €119.00) contains that same choral score plus the conductor’s score, an SATB choir score and all 19 parts for winds, timpani, strings, organ and the four voices — from the rehearsal room to the full Christmas performance without buying anything else.

Is the text in Latin?

Yes. Kempter sets the complete Latin Ordinary — Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei with Dona nobis pacem — and the text is underlaid in the full score, the choral scores and every voice part.

What licence do we get, and what is the refund policy?

Kempter’s composition is in the public domain, so no royalties are due for the work itself. This edition is published by Edition Zeitlos, Austria, and your purchase licenses you to print the parts for your own ensemble and to perform the mass with the purchasing ensemble in concert and liturgy — you own the files, there is no rental and no return deadline. Any reporting of the public performance to a performing-rights society (GEMA/AKM/SUISA, or ASCAP/BMI/PRS elsewhere) is handled by the organiser as usual. Because the complete files are delivered immediately, downloads cannot be refunded; please study the score previews on this page, and contact us for extended sample pages before buying if you would like to see more.

Can the edition be customised?

Yes — bespoke adaptation is a core service of Paul Lorenz. Transpositions for your soloists, reduced or alternative scorings (for example brass instead of woodwinds, or a string quintet with organ), additional parts or a voicing adapted to the singers you actually have this Christmas are available on request. Please ask before you buy.
